About
The notorious highwayman Dick Turpin was hanged in York in 1739 and is said to lie in St George's churchyard off Fishergate. A gravestone marks the spot, though some doubt remains over whether he is really there. The story goes that body-snatchers stole his body, an angry crowd recovered it and he was reburied in quicklime.
