Free things to do in Doncaster

Doncaster has two very good free museums, and both are easy to reach. Danum Gallery, Library and Museum in the town centre is free to enter, and so is Cusworth Hall, a Georgian country house on the edge of town with parkland that is open every day. Add Sprotbrough Flash, a free Yorkshire Wildlife Trust reserve on the River Don, and you have a full day out without paying for tickets.

The mix covers museums, parks, woods and wetland reserves. Rainy days suit Danum and Cusworth Hall, while spring and summer are best for the nature reserves and big parks like Sandall Park. Check museum opening days before you set off, as neither one opens seven days a week.

Best for rainy days

Danum Gallery, Library and Museum is free and open Monday to Saturday, with rail heritage locomotives, a Roman shield found in Doncaster and the Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry Museum all under one roof. Cusworth Hall's free museum of Doncaster life is another good dry option, open Friday to Monday.

Best for families

Sandall Park has toddler and junior play areas, a woodland adventure play area and a lake that takes about 20 minutes to walk round, plus free parking. Cusworth Hall's parkland and Town Fields give children plenty of room to run about.

Best for walks and views

Sprotbrough Flash Nature Reserve is free and open at all times, with a level towpath along the River Don, woodland trails and two bird hides. For quieter walks, try Melton Wood, Hatchell Wood LNR or Thorpe Marsh Nature Reserve.

Getting there and around

Doncaster station is on the East Coast Main Line, with fast trains to London King's Cross, York, Leeds and Edinburgh, plus regular Northern trains to Sheffield and Hull. The station sits in the town centre next to the Frenchgate Centre and its bus interchange, so Danum Gallery, Library and Museum is an easy walk. Town centre parking is paid, and Cusworth Hall's car park charges too (card only), but Sandall Park has free parking. Most of the nature reserves are outside the town and are easiest by car or local bus.
